Bruckner Chase has accomplished unthinkable feats in the world’s most illusive environment: the ocean. Just one of his experiences captures it well – On August 24, 2010, at 4:00 AM, surrounded by a community of supporters, Bruckner Chase embarked on a 25-mile marathon swim to connect Santa Cruz to Monterey while also connecting those on land with the waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Those twenty-five miles developed into an epic fourteen-hour journey during which Bruckner encountered everything from massive jellyfish to blue whales, fog and white-capped swells, the moonset over the sea and the sunrise over the mountains. The swim was a test of physical and emotional fortitude and became a means to forge an emotional tie between the communities surrounding the Sanctuary and the fascinating adventures taking place just beyond the shore.
He uses the personal journey of a swim like this as a backdrop to educate people about the importance of caring for our aquatic ecosystems. From being a technical advisor to the Special Olympics to serving as an ambassador for the National Marine Sanctuary Program, Bruckner is dedicated to the mission of his own non-profit, Ocean Positive, “To positively impact how we feel, think and act towards our oceans.”
In a unique project, Bruckner is making a film in Amerika Samoa entitled, 2Samoas-1Ocean. Stay tuned for the launch of this story about his involvement in The Toa o le Tai – Amerika Samoa Ocean Heroes program and The Samoana High School Ocean Swimming/Ocean Science for-credit class. The film reveals the modern irony of island people who are culturally and physically isolated from yet bound to the ocean… and what we can do to keep that connection alive for ourselves, for island dwellers and for the world as a whole.
In partnership, Elemental Herbs appreciates Bruckner as an ocean advocate, a voice for the mystical and wondrous water underworld, and a leader in helping us change our ways to act ocean mindfully.
